Lawn care and cleaning job price calculator

Most one-person crews price a visit by guessing what the neighbors charge. This calculator builds the price from your own costs: the hours on site, the drive between jobs, your equipment and vehicle cost, materials, a share of overhead and the profit you want to keep.

Enter the numbers for one typical visit. You get the price to quote, your profit per visit and the revenue per hour on site.

How the math works

  • Labor is crew size times wage times on-site hours plus drive time.
  • Equipment is the cost per on-site hour times the hours. Vehicle cost is the cost per hour times the drive time.
  • Direct cost is labor plus equipment plus vehicle plus materials.
  • Overhead is added as a percentage of direct cost.
  • Price is cost divided by one minus your target margin, so the margin is a share of the price.

Worked example

One worker at 20 an hour spends 1 hour on site and 30 minutes driving. Equipment costs 5 per on-site hour, the vehicle 10 per driving hour, materials are 2, overhead is 10 percent and the target margin is 20 percent. Direct cost is 42, cost with overhead is 46.20, and the price to quote is 57.75, a profit of 11.55.

Questions people ask

What wage should I enter?

Pay yourself the same hourly rate you would pay an employee, even if you work alone, so the business covers its own labor.

What is overhead?

Insurance, software, phone, storage, accounting and similar costs that are not tied to one job. Many owners start with 10 to 20 percent and adjust from their own records.

Is the target margin a markup?

No. It is a share of the price. A 20 percent margin is a 25 percent markup on cost.
